What Is the TIAS Capacity Test?

The TIAS Capacity Test is an aptitude test that can be taken as a GMAT alternative by MBA applicants for the TIAS School for Business and Society.

The main advantage of taking the TIAS Capacity Test over the GMAT is that it can be taken in languages other than English.

The TIAS Capacity Test is comprised of two tests conducted by SHL, one of the world’s leading test providers. You can read more about SHL here.

Test Structure and Question Format

The TIAS Capacity Test has two sections, which you will take as two different tests.

Numerical Reasoning Test

This is an interactive test comprised of 10 questions to be solved in 18 minutes. The test is actually one of SHL’s shelf products – their SHL Verify Interactive Numerical Reasoning Test.

It contains 3 main question types:

  • Bar graphs
  • Pie charts
  • Rankings

Here’s an example of what a bar graphs question on the test may look like (minus the interactivity).

SHL Numerical Interactive Sample Question

In the Free Practice section, we provide a full solution for this question, as well as two other question types you may find on the numerical section of the TIAS Capacity Test.

Verbal Reasoning Test

This is a traditional multiple-choice test that contains 30 questions to be solved in 19 minutes. This test is also one of SHL’s shelf products, their SHL Verify Verbal Reasoning Test.

Unlike the numerical section, which contains various types of questions, all questions on the verbal section of the TIAS Capacity Test follow the same format.

Here’s an example:

Many companies encourage their employees to engage in leisure activities and workshops during their working day. Not only that, but many employers also fund these activities.

Some may raise an eyebrow, as it could seem counterproductive for an employer to pay twice for an employee’s time – once through the cost of the activity or workshop, and twice through lost work hours.

However, recent data shows that participation in these activities has a major positive impact on employee productivity and retention.

Employees who attend free-time activities and workshops during working hours tend to stay longer hours in the office.

  1. True
  2. False
  3. Cannot Say

In the Preparation section, we recommend the ONLY prep course that provides accurate coverage of the TIAS Capacity Test.

Free TIAS Capacity Test Practice

The following practice test offers 3 numerical sample questions and 3 verbal sample questions.

Remember that the actual TIAS numerical test will be interactive (which is not replicated here). However, the content of the questions and their formatting is very similar to the real thing.

Recommended completion time:

  • Numerical – 5.5 minutes.
  • Verbal – 2 minutes.

Good luck!

Question 1 – Numerical (Bar Graphs)

SHL Numerical Reasoning (Interactive) Sample Question

SHL Numerical Interactive Sample Question

Answer and Explanation

The final solution looks like this:

SHL Numerical Interactive Bar Graphs Answer

This is a bar graph question – a very common type in the interactive versions of the SHL Numerical Reasoning and General Ability tests.

We recommend solving these questions with the help of a table:

SHL Numerical Interactive Help Table

Want to try using this table yourself? Get a printable PDF template for your SHL test.

  • The bold cells are what we actually need to find.
  • Bold type numbers represent data given in the question. Regular type numbers are derived from that data.
  • The Roman numerals in parentheses (I) represent the equation used to derive that number (see below).

Formulating equations and calculations:

  1. (Stocks Ben) + 50 + (Stocks Ben) = 250 → (Stocks Ben) = 100
  2. 1050 – 700 = 350
  3. 1050 – 500 – 250 = 300
  4. 100/250 = 40%
  5. 350 x 30% = 105 (Adam manages 30% of total stocks)
  6. 350 – 100 – 105 = 145
  7. 145/500 = 29%

This is where we stop. No need to calculate further.

What’s good about this solving method is that it shows you EXACTLY the data you need to find, as well as how simple it is to calculate with the horizontal-and-vertical structure of the table.

Pro Tip

Bar graphs questions often follow a rather uniform format. We recommend trying to use a ready-made template for them. You can get a free printable PDF template here.

Question 2 – Numerical (Pie Charts)

SHL Numerical Interactive Pie Chart Question

Answer and Explanation

The final answer looks like this:

SHL Numerical Interactive Pie Chart Answer

Let’s formulate the 4 equations based on the data provided:

  1. 2N + S = 65
  2. E = W
  3. 2(S + W) = 126
  4. E + W + S + N = 100 à 2W + S + N = 100 (Due to eq. 2)

The best way to solve these 4 equations is to represent all variables using a single variable.

It would be faster to choose either S or N, because once we find them both, the question is practically solved. Let’s pick S. However – this can be done with any variable you choose.

  1. N = (65 – S) / 2
  2. W = 63 – S

Plugging into 4 and solving yields:

S = 39.

And, therefore, N = 13.

The remainder of the pie should divide equally between E and W:

(100 – 39 – 13) / 2 = 24

E = W = 24.

Question 3 – Numerical (Rankings)

SHL Numerical Interactive Rankings Question

Answer and Explanation

The correct ranking is as follows:

SHL Numerical Interactive Sample Answer - Rankings

Let’s formulate the 4 equations based on the data provided:

  1. A = B + 2
  2. B = F + 2
  3. C = 25
  4. D = (A/2) + (B/3)
  5. E = (D + F)/2
  6. (F/4) + C = E [Did you write (C+F)/4 = E? Check out the Pro Tip below].

After solving this system of equations, we get:

  1. Adam – 40
  2. Ben – 38
  3. Fei – 36
  4. Elizabeth – 34
  5. Dan – 32
  6. Catherine – 25

Pro Tip

Rankings questions tend to use somewhat ambiguous phrasing, possibly on purpose. For instance, in the question above, sentence 6 can be interpreted as either (F/4) + C or (C+F)/4. However, if you solve it in the second way, you’ll end up with a contradiction.

Pay careful attention and try to keep these potentially risky equations to the end.

Question 4 – Verbal #1

Many companies encourage their employees to engage in leisure activities and workshops during their working day. Not only that, but many employers also fund these activities.

Some may raise an eyebrow, as it could seem counterproductive for an employer to pay twice for an employee’s time – once through the cost of the activity or workshop, and twice through lost work hours.

However, recent data shows that participation in these activities has a major positive impact on employee productivity and retention.

Employees who attend free-time activities and workshops during working hours tend to stay longer hours in the office.

  1. True
  2. False
  3. Cannot Say

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is Cannot Say.

While we know that free-time activities and workshops during work has a major impact on productivity, it does not mean that this impact is acquired through longer working hours. It may be a better working atmosphere, better interpersonal relationships, motivation, etc.

Question 5 – Verbal #2

Effective leadership is a key predictor of organizational success. Leaders must navigate their teams in today’s fast-paced, competitive, and uncertain markets. Qualities such as strategic thinking, adaptability, and decision-making are essential for achieving strategic goals. Moreover, over the past two decades, boards and senior management increasingly view interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence as crucial for effective leadership and have made these skills a key requirement in their search for candidates.

Business leaders with high emotional intelligence are held in higher regard by senior management today than twenty years ago.

  1. True
  2. False
  3. Cannot Say

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is True.

According to the text:

Over the past two decades…senior management increasingly viewemotional intelligence as crucial for effective leadership and have made these skills a key requirement in their search for candidates.”

The word “increasingly” indicates that senior management view emotional intelligence as more crucial for effective leadership than twenty years ago.

Question 6 – Verbal #3

Digital transformation has become a strategy many organizations implement to stay competitive. Apart from their technical complexity, such transformations also require the commitment and involvement of the entire organization to prevail – managers and employees alike. When a business embarks on the digital transformation journey, it frequently integrates advanced technologies into its activity, including AI and big data analytics. These technologies have the power to revolutionize business processes, enhance efficiency, and make better decisions.

A successful digital transformation is usually imposed by senior management.

  1. True
  2. False
  3. Cannot Say

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is False.

According to the text: “…transformations also require the commitment and involvement of the entire organization to prevail – managers and employees alike.

Hence, a digital transformation imposed by senior management will not be successful, according to the text.
