What Is the Akuna Capital Mental Math Test?

The Akuna Capital Math Test is an online assessment designed and administered by HackerRank. It is intended to quickly evaluate your mathematic abilities using two sections:

  • Calculations – Perform quick and accurate mental calculations. 80 questions in 8 minutes.
  • Sequences – Find the next number or letter in a sequence. 30 questions in 16 minutes.

In both of these tests, you are not expected to answer all the questions. Answer as many as you can in the allowed time.

Note that according to the test rules, you are not allowed to use a calculator (obviously), but not even pen and paper. While this is a common practice in calculation tests, this limitation is quite unusual in number sequence tests.

Test Structure and Question Format

Let’s cover each of the two sections of the test in a bit more detail, including some sample questions and tips.

Section 1 – Calculations

The Calculations section of the Akuna Math Test contains 80 basic math questions covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You need to solve as many of them in 8 minutes. This form of testing is often referred to as “80-in-8” and is used by a variety of trading firms such as Akuna, Maven, and Optiver.

In the Free Practice section, I reveal some of the tricks used in the Akuna Math Test to add extra challenge to the questions.

Pro Tip

Unlike other versions of the 80-in-8 test, the Akuna Capital version does not cover fractions – one less thing to worry about!

Section 2 – Sequences

In each of the 30 questions on the Sequences section, you will be presented with a sequence of numbers (and seldom, letters). You will need to find the next element in the sequence. Solve as many sequences as you can in 16 minutes.

In the Free Practice section, I provide a few tricky sequences adapted from the assessment – check out if you can solve them!

Pro Tip

The main challenge of the Sequences test is that it does not allow the use of pen and paper. Therefore, you must practice the ability to mentally visualize the series of differences.

A Few Extra Tips

While both the Calculations and the Sequences tests are simple and straightforward, here are some little, important details:

  • The tests are not multiple-choice. Instead, you will need to type in your answers.
  • You may move back and forth between questions (but not sections).
  • You may not change submitted answers.

You can check out a bit more details in the Test Interface section.

Test Invitation

The test invitation will be sent to you via email and will include only the deadline and a test link.

You will have 30 days to complete the assessment.

Test Interface

The interface of the Akuna Capital Math Test is pretty easy to understand:

  • On the left-hand side you will see the question numbers. You may move freely between questions, but not between sections.
  • Once you submit a question, it will be checkmarked. You can change your answer to submitted questions, but I’d recommended against it. The checkmarks make it difficult to spot questions for later review, and this method is likely to result in a loss of precious time.
  • All answers must be typed in and manually submitted.
  • The top bar shows how many questions you have answered and the remaining time.

Free Practice

This free practice is divided into two parts:

  • Calculations – You don’t need me to teach you how to calculate. Instead, I’ll show you some of the common tricks used in the Calculations section to increase difficulty.
  • Sequences – intended to demonstrate the expected level of difficulty and share some inside tips.

Good luck!

Question 1 – Calculations

0.88 + 4.56 = ?

Tailored Tip

The lack of answer options in the Akuna Capital test does not allow you to use estimation methods like the last digit. Therefore, you have to be well-practiced with addition of subtraction of annoying decimals.

Question 2 – Calculations

2,250 x 400 = ?

Tailored Tip

The Akuna Capital Math Test is fond of using large numbers to trick you. Make sure you typed in the correct number of zeroes!

Question 3 – Calculations

0.04 x (50 ÷ 4) = ?

Tailored Tip

Three operations in a row are another common technique. Finding the most convenient order of calculation will save valuable time. For instance, in this example: (0.04 ÷ 4) x 50 = 0.5

Question 4 – Sequences

1, 4, 10, 20, 35, 56, 84, ?

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is 120.

To solve this problem, we need to find the second series of differences:

1    4    10    20    35    56    84    120

   3    6    10    15    21    28    36

      3    4     5     6     7     8

Question 5 – Sequences

1.333, 1.25, 1.2, 0.875, 0.8889

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is 0.9.

This sequence looks very weird, until you turn it into fractions:

fractions

As you can see, both the nominator and the denominator increase by 1 with each step.

Question 6 – Sequences

18, 225, 22, 13, 45, 16, 8, 9, 10, ?

Answer and Explanation

The correct answer is 3.

This particularly annoying sequence is a combination of three different sequences:

18, 225, 22, 13, 45, 16, 8, 9, 10,

  • The black sequence decreases by 5 with each step.
  • The red sequence is divided by 5 with each step.
  • The green sequence decreases by 6 with each step.

The next number will belong to the black series and is therefore 8 – 5 = 3.
